In April, 2009, St. Mary
Parish adopted San Francisco de Asis. In April, 2009, St. Mary
Parish adopted San Francisco de Asís Parish as its "sister parish."
Taking a "sister parish" is sometimes called "twinning." In this
arrangement, the members of both parishes pray for each other. In
addition, the American parish takes up a second collection once or
twice a year to help financially. The non-American parish welcomes
lay missionaries from the American parish to give the American
missionaries a taste of Church life in other parts of the world.
San Francisco de Asís Parish is located in the mountains of Honduras
in the District (which is like a state) of Francisco Morazan, the
same district where the capital of Honduras-Tegucigalpa-is located.
Unlike our parish that only has 1 church in one location, San
Francisco de Asís Parish has 72 churches and chapels. Some of the
churches can only be gotten to by burro, and many of the roads are
extremely treacherous. There is only one priest to serve these 72
churches, Padre Ivis Ordóñez, who is 37 years old and has been
ordained for only one year!
Guided by the Holy Spirit, St. Mary Parish hopes to help this parish
in many ways, such as helping build a clinic for the people. At the
same time, we believe our contact with our Honduran brothers and
sisters will inflame our own hearts and parish with renewed
enthusiasm for the missionary mandate that Jesus Christ taught us.
